Winston Churchill's Involvement in the War
In opposition to Chamberlain's policy of appeasement, Churchill took a very militaristic view to the Nazi threat. Even before his ascension to Prime Minister, he argued for a more proactive British involvement in stopping Nazi expansionism. His mother was American, and he must thus have felt a certain connection with the nation that later proved to be his greatest ally against Germany. His highly charismatic speeches helped to sustain Britain during the terrors of the Blitz. Despite the dangers posed, he remained in London during the bombings, showing solidarity that must have helped people lead their normal lives in a war zone. Churchill's "bulldog" fighting spirit helped to motivate both Britons and Americans to action, and essentially saved his nation from total collapse during World War II.
